Description

Ambergris is often described as one of the world's strangest natural occurrences. It is produced by sperm whales and has been used for centuries, but for many years its origin remained a mystery.  Ambergris has been a unique phenomenon for millennia. Fossilised evidence of the substance dates back 1.75 million years, and it is likely that humans have been using it for more than 1,000 years. It has been called the treasure of the sea and floating gold. Where it comes from remained a mystery for years, during which several theories were proposed, including that it was hardened sea foam or the droppings of large birds. However, it was not until large-scale whaling began in the 1800s that the identity of its sole producer, the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), was uncovered. Sperm whales eat large quantities of cephalopods such as squid and cuttlefish.

Botanical Name :-  Ambra grisea

Smell :-  Ambergris is often described as being musky and having a sweet earthy aroma unlike any other or a mossy fragrance reminiscent of the damp forest floor.

Uses:-  Ambergris has been mostly known for its use in creating perfume and fragrance much like musk. Perfumes can still be found with ambergris around the world. It is collected from remains found at sea and on beaches, although its precursor originates from the sperm whale, which is a vulnerable species.

Ambergris oil best known for its use in the perfume industry as a fixative for fine perfumes. It has also been used in some cultures for medicinal purposes, as herbal remedy and as an aphrodisiac. Ambergris releases pheromones making it a true aphrodisiac, a quality which has added to the mystery surrounding the product.
